Should Christians obey the government?
The Bible generally teaches Christians to respect governing authorities, obey the law, pray for leaders, and live peacefully in society. At the same time, Scripture makes an important distinction: human authority is not greater than God's authority.
What Does Romans 13 Say About Government?
One of the clearest passages is Romans 13:1:
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God."
Paul teaches Christians to recognize legitimate governing authority. Government has an important role in maintaining order and restraining wrongdoing.
Christians should therefore not reject laws simply because they dislike them. Respect for authority is part of responsible Christian living.
Christians Should Respect Authorities
First Peter 2:13-17 also instructs believers to submit to governing authorities.
Peter concludes:
"Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king."
Notice the distinction. The ruler is to be honored, but God is to be feared. Political leaders deserve appropriate respect, but they do not take God's place.
Christians Should Obey the Law
Titus 3:1 tells Christians:
"Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates."
Christians should normally be known as peaceful and responsible members of society. This includes respecting lawful authority and fulfilling legitimate civic responsibilities.
Jesus Said to Give Caesar What Belongs to Caesar
Jesus was once questioned about paying taxes to Caesar.
He answered:
"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."
This statement recognizes a legitimate place for civil authority while also establishing an important boundary. Caesar does not own everything. God has the highest claim upon human life.
Christians Should Pray for Government Leaders
The Bible does not only tell Christians how to behave toward rulers. It also tells believers to pray for them.
First Timothy 2:1-2 calls for prayers to be made for kings and others in authority so that people may live peaceful and godly lives.
Christians can therefore pray for leaders even when they disagree with their policies.
We can pray that leaders act with wisdom, justice, integrity, and concern for those under their authority.
Must Christians Always Obey the Government?
No human authority receives unlimited obedience in Scripture.
Acts 5 provides an important example.
The apostles were commanded by the authorities not to teach in the name of Jesus. Peter and the other apostles responded:
"We ought to obey God rather than men."
This establishes an important Christian principle.
Normally, Christians should obey legitimate authorities. But when a human authority directly requires a Christian to disobey God, loyalty to God comes first.
Daniel Obeyed God Above Human Authority
The book of Daniel provides another example.
Daniel served within a foreign government and carried out significant responsibilities faithfully.
But when a royal decree prohibited prayer to anyone except the king, Daniel continued praying to God.
Daniel did not rebel simply because he disliked the government. The conflict arose because the command directly interfered with his obedience to God.
Does Submission Mean Christians Cannot Criticize Government?
Biblical submission does not mean declaring that everything a government does is morally right.
The prophets confronted kings about injustice and sin. John the Baptist challenged Herod's wrongdoing. The apostles continued preaching when ordered to stop.
Christians can respect governmental authority while also speaking truth about injustice and wrongdoing.
When disagreement is necessary, Christians should seek to act truthfully, peacefully, wisely, and consistently with their faith.
God Is the Highest Authority
Government has authority, but government is not God.
Political leaders are temporary. God's authority is ultimate.
This protects Christians from two opposite errors.
We should not treat legitimate government authority with contempt simply because we disagree with it.
But neither should we give any government the unconditional obedience that belongs to God alone.
Conclusion
Does the Bible teach Christians to obey authorities?
Yes. Christians are generally called to respect governing authorities, obey legitimate laws, fulfill their responsibilities, pray for leaders, and seek peaceful lives.
Romans 13 teaches submission to governing authorities. First Peter 2 teaches respect. Titus 3 teaches obedience to magistrates. First Timothy 2 teaches prayer for leaders.
But human authority has limits.
When authorities directly command what God forbids or forbid what God commands, Scripture gives us the principle expressed by the apostles:
"We ought to obey God rather than men." — Acts 5:29
Christians should therefore respect earthly authority while remembering that their highest allegiance belongs to God.
